The CAGED system is a visual and theoretical methodology that maps the five fundamental open chord grips—C Major, A Major, G Major, E Major, and D Major—across the entire length of the guitar neck.
Because the guitar is tuned in standard intervals (E-A-D-G-B-E, four fourths and one major third between G and B), every open chord grip has a moveable barre equivalent. As you move up the neck chromatically, these five shapes always connect in the exact same cyclical sequence:
